Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lancaster Lightning's Practice Schedule and What does my Athlete Need for Practice?

We practice at Elsie Robertson Lancaster STEM Middle School: 822 W Pleasant Run Rd, Lancaster, TX 75146
Summer track practice for the outdoor season begins at 6:00PM and is held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Practice typically lasts for an hour and a half (if athletes arrive on time!), and later in the season as we get nearer to our championship meets practice duration may extend an additional half hour.
All athletes need to bring water to practice - and on practice days athletes should hydrate frequently throughout the day. Athletes also need proper footwear for practice. If your athlete has asthma or another medical condition please ensure you notify their coach and if possible leave an extra inhaler at the practice facility during the season.
Athletes should have lightweight, breathable outerwear for practice. A long-sleeve dry fit top is ideal for protecting athletes from sunburn. Any athletic shorts are appropriate as long as they completely cover undergarments.
Athletes need their parents/guardians at practice with them. Please do not drop your child off and leave practice. Injuries and emergencies happen in all sports. It is ok for parents to stay in their car during practice - as long as you are immediately available should your child need urgent care.

When and where are track meets held and what do I need to know about competition days?

Track meets typically take place on Saturdays, and the majority of the meets we participate in throughout the regular season are hosted at Desoto High School and Lancaster High School.
Competition usually begins at 8:00AM and your athlete should arrive an hour before so they may perform their stretch/warm-up routine.
Bring spikes and running shoes to the meets. Bring plenty of water and healthy snacks for the athlete; meets last all day so it is imperative athletes get the nutrition they need for sustained performance. Coolers are allowed at meets.
A tent, canopy, or other element to shade yourself from the sun is critical! There is a team tent for athletes and family to sit under and coaches will notify athletes and their families where we have it setup before each meet.
Admission for standard meets throughout the season are usually $10 for spectators and the same for each athlete.

What kind of shoes does my track and field athlete need?

Footwear requirements depend on what discipline/event the athlete specializes in. A good pair of running shoes or trainers are a necessity for runners to practice in. They should fit snuggly, don't buy with extra room for the athletes foot to grow as these shoes should be replaced each season due to wear from training. Runners will also need a pair of spikes to compete with. If you don't know exactly what event your runner will participate in, contact their coach before you buy spikes - as there are separate categories of spikes for short sprinters, long sprinters, and middle distance runners.

Throwers and jumpers will need footwear for their respective events as well as trainers for practice.
